What’s in My Camera Bag for CES 2025? 🎥📸
Hey everyone! 👋 David here, and I’m gearing up for CES 2025. This year, I wanted to give you a peek inside my camera bag to show you how I’m preparing for the chaos of a massive convention center. Let’s dive in!
The Setup: Run-and-Gun Filming
CES is loud, busy, and unpredictable—perfect for a run-and-gun filming setup. My focus is to keep my gear light, efficient, and ready to adapt to any situation. Here’s what I’m packing:
Audio Gear: Because Bad Audio = Bad Video 🎤
Let’s face it: You can get away with imperfect video, but bad audio is a dealbreaker. Here’s how I’m ensuring crystal-clear sound, even in a noisy convention center:
Sennheiser MD 46 Microphone: A dynamic mic with excellent off-axis rejection to cut out the background noise. Perfect for interviews in crowded spaces.
Tascam DR-10X Recorder: Clips right onto the mic for easy, reliable recording. I’ll sync the audio in post, which is a breeze with tools like DaVinci Resolve.
Zoom F3 Field Recorder: My backup. It’s a 32-bit float recorder, so it captures everything from whispers to screams without clipping. It’s a bit bulky, so it stays in the bag unless absolutely needed.

DJI Mic Mini: For vlogging or quieter environments outside the venue. Lightweight, easy to use, and produces great quality. https://geni.us/DJIMcMini
Camera Gear: Capturing Every Detail 📷
For video, I’m relying on the Sony A7 IV, my workhorse camera with a full-frame sensor that excels in low-light conditions—perfect for dimly lit booths and venues at CES.
Lenses
- Wide-Angle Lens: Great for capturing immersive footage of booths and crowds.
- Tamron 28-75mm Zoom Lens: A versatile lens for interviews and general use.
Accessories
iPhone as a Monitor: Using my iPhone for monitoring because it’s super bright and easy to mount. Perfect for sunny conditions outside.
SmallRig Multi-Tool: A must-have for tightening screws and adjusting the camera cage on the fly. I use this thing for everything. Honestly, it feels as reliable as my Leatherman. It is also TSA carry on approved!
Video Support: Storage & Backup 💾
CES days are long, and the footage piles up fast. Here’s how I keep my data safe:
- CFexpress Cards: Fast and reliable storage for my Sony camera.
- Dual SSD Setup: I back up my footage to two SSDs from different manufacturers to minimize failure risk. I also hash-check the files to ensure integrity. If you are working in any type of professional production you must ensure you have backups.
- Footage Workflow: I carry a CFexpress card reader and my laptop, enabling quick, on-the-go backups. Bonus: I give one SSD to my buddy Chris, so we’ve got redundancy across coasts!
The Bag: Shimoda Explorer V2 🎒
All this gear needs a sturdy home. Enter my Shimoda Explorer V2 backpack. https://amzn.to/3PjgXEF
- Rugged and spacious enough to carry everything safely.
- Comes with a rain fly (not that I’m expecting rain in Vegas).
- Equipped with a Peak Design Capture Clip, so I can easily carry my main camera on the outside for quick access.
Bonus: Merch Alert! 🛠️
If you see me at CES, check out my new “Fix it in Post” tags! They’re inspired by those “Remove Before Flight” tags, and I’ll have a bunch with me. If you want one, just ask, maybe I’ll throw them up for sale for a couple of bucks.
