Are you looking to maximize your personal item allowance when you travel this summer? If so, maybe the Mini MLC-30L from Patagonia is for you? In today's review, we will be taking a closer look at the Patagonia Black Hole Mini MLC Backpack, specifically the 30 liter variant. Although this backpack belongs to my wife, she kindly allowed me to review it. After using it for a few days, I have to say that I am fairly impressed.

The Perfect Travel Companion

As someone who typically relies on the Peter McKinnon Everyday Backpack (25 liter version) as my go-to backpack, I was intrigued by the different approach of the Patagonia Black Hole Mini MLC Backpack. While the Everyday Backpack is specifically designed for photographers, with a focus on securely transporting gear and providing organization, the Black Hole Mini MLC Backpack aims to optimize the available space.

Ample Packing Capacity

One of the most notable features of this backpack is its impressive packing capacity. With efficient packing techniques, you can fit almost a week's worth of clothes inside. Of course, you will need to be selective with your items, but the essentials can certainly be accommodated. Additionally, the bag is comfortable to carry, whether you prefer to wear it as a backpack or use it as a messenger-style bag. The detachable hip strap allows for versatility, enabling you to use it as a shoulder bag if desired.

Customizable Exterior for Added Convenience

The exterior of the backpack is equipped with various attachment points for carabiners or shock cord, offering customized options and additional storage possibilities. It includes a spacious water bottle carrier that can easily hold standard-sized bottles. However, bear in mind that a larger Nalgene bottle may not fit comfortably.

Quick Access Pocket: Always Within Reach

At the top of the bag, you will find a convenient quick access pocket. This is perfect for storing items like sunglasses or any other essentials that you may need to reach quickly while on the move, without the need to open up all the compartments. Additionally, there is a helpful strap between the shoulder straps that allows you to attach the bag to your rolling luggage. This feature is particularly advantageous on long days at the airport, as it helps lighten the load on your shoulders.

Spacious Interior with Smart Organization

When it comes to the interior of the backpack, the main compartment is remarkably spacious. By utilizing packing cubes, such as the Eagle Creek packet cubes, you can fit a substantial amount of clothing inside. The Peak Design wash pouch or tech pouch also fit perfectly in this area. Furthermore, there are several smaller zipper compartments for storing accessories like wallets or jewelry. These compartments are best suited for thinner items.

Dedicated Laptop and Electronics Section

The backpack includes a dedicated section for laptops and electronics as well. The laptop compartment is well-padded and comfortably accommodates a laptop along with an iPad placed in front of it. In my experience, my Framework laptop and iPad mini fit flawlessly in this space. Furthermore, there are various storage options available across from the laptop compartment, including a key holder, an SD card holder, and even room for a retro arcade emulator.

Flying Under the Radar: Size Considerations

It is important to note that technically, this backpack may not meet the size requirements for most airlines' personal item allowance. However, due to its soft and flexible construction, you can usually fly under the radar as long as you refrain from overpacking the bag. It should fit snugly in most overhead compartments without any issues.

💡
Note! This may technically not fit the guidelines (especially for budget airlines). Check your airlines website! This bag does squish down well if not packed full.

Conclusion: A Versatile and Spacious Travel Companion

Overall, the Patagonia Black Hole Mini MLC Backpack is a versatile and spacious option for those seeking to make the most of their personal item allowance when traveling. With its generous packing capacity, customizable exterior, and dedicated compartments for laptops and accessories, it offers a practical and functional solution. Although it may not strictly comply with all airline size requirements, its flexibility ensures a comfortable fit on most flights.

So, whether you are embarking on a weekend getaway or a longer excursion, the Patagonia Black Hole Mini MLC Backpack is worth considering. Its ability to efficiently utilize space without compromising on comfort or organization makes it an excellent choice for the modern traveler. Experience the convenience and versatility of this backpack on your next adventure!
