Ditch the Dopp Kit?
Over the past year I have really been trying to slim down what I take with me when I travel. To start off this story:
I have two guilty pleasures - Frozen Pizza, and Theme Parks. My wife and I are constantly taking trips to Universal Studios Orlando as we are passholders. We have a local airport that has very cheap flights. There is just one stipulation - you only get a personal item.
This really sent me down the path slimming down to only the essentials. This lead me to ditching my traditional dopp kit, from Peak Design and going with traditional ziplock baggies.
I think we all started with Ziplock bags when we were new travelers. This brought back the memory of dealing with bags that ultimately only lasted a trip or two and created lots of waste. This lead me on a hunt to find the best alternative.
While working in my studio one day, I realized that my Tentacle Sync lavalier mic had the perfect bag - it was just too small:
It took a ton of research to find exactly what type of bag this was. It was durable, thing, zip-able, and most importantly transparent and easy to see through. After searching the web I found them, at a ridiculously cheap price. You can find them here:
Soon after, I was using the smaller bags to carry my medication and organize my tech gear. Soon, I had cut down my carry by almost a quarter. I did not realize how much space I was using up by just these big organizers alone.
Maybe this is something you should try? The buy-in is extremely low - heck you may even have Ziplocks in your pantry you could try again.
